Set during the episode Examination for Lieutenant, after steering the fireboat away from the Indefatigable the young Hornblower's injuries are slightly worse than he first anticipated. Pride dictates that he doesn't let the crew know their full extant once back aboard ship, but Hornblower doesn't for one thing - the loyalty of his friends.
