The Rocinante drifts silently, her crew focused on investigating unusual Protomolecule activity near the Ring gate. They find the derelict ship Escher contaminated by the Protomolecule. Captain James Holden and his crew board the Escher, encountering ghostly remnants and hallucinations.

Nik and the other orphans that lived in the shadows on Tyco station are about to lose their home to progress. Amos takes an interest in helping them and gets the crew of the Roci pulled into their drama. Does Amos save Nik or is it the other way around?

No matter how hard the world convulses, Chrisjen Avasarala will be there to hold it steady. And if she can even save her old student Sadavir Errinwright along with it, so much the better. Bobbie wasn't that kind of woman. They didn't have that kind of relationship. It wasn't so much love between them as it was a different but no less strong bond. Out here in the depths of space, it was so easy to get lost, so easy to go adrift, so easy to cling to the nearest particle that was even remotely alike.
