Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I will be a new beta. However, the majority of my time is spent in peer workshops for fiction. I like to be told by a specific author the area he or she most wants . (not including basic editing) I hope to develop writing relationships with people. With this, I don't want to be making the same suggestions for fifty stories. I like to see growth. I am not an editor and don't beta with that type of a critical eye. br /br /br /br /

I know I can offer writers a keen, artistic eye. When I am reading exceptional work, I always imagine the characters sitting at a table sharing a meal. My poetry professor said the first day of class "a good poem is like Pop Rocks in your mouth." That's more or less my writing a peer reviewing mantra. br /br /br /br /

I like to joke so if chosen to beta, try not to be offended by my sense (or lack there of) humor. The first few times I read, I can seem cold. I am just establishing and finding the writer's voice. Once I have a handle on who the writer is, I become less standoffish. br /br /br /br /

I see my role as a story surgeon. I can separate the work from the writer. I do believe great authors possess a mysticism, but find people who romanticize their stories to be largely lazy. The more we write, the better we become. Talent and gifts are real but fortune favors the prepared.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My writing has a strong voice. Generally, my character interaction and conversation flows very well in a natural manner. I have a large vocabulary and use it well. My use of language is good. The settings of my stories are easily imagined. Here or in my sketch book or school, I write fiction every single day. That discipline benefits the structure of my work.
|
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can be too reserved. My focus can be too intense in one area and nonexistent in another. My plots at times lack depth (ie backstory). I don't like or feel comfortable beta reading. (That's one of the main reasons I'm applying, to improve) Although weak writing frustrates me, I feel bad giving because stories are a part of the writer and I don't like being critical with people. There are times I skim read. I am often dense. When a writer is allegedly going for regular (not sci-fi or fantasy) life, and the story has all these super dramatic plots, I am really unforgiving. Sure, there's drama in real life but not major every day!
|
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Because I am so strong in character interactions/conversations, stories that are heavy on this would benefit most from my betareading.
|
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I don't really want science fiction or fantasy. These are two genres I am just not familiar enough with to offer constructive . Other than that, I am open for most anything.
